Strain is a deformation of material as a result of the stresses applied. This deformation permanently damages the material involved through molecular shearing. The rate of damage is related to the frequency and magnitude of the stresses, therefore controlling and managing unnecessary strain will result in increased material life and a reduction in secondary damage. There is a perception in the reliability industry that failures are random and happen suddenly. These conclusions are the consequence of not having a convenient measure of the accumulated stress. That is, though random failures occur in some cases, the accumulated stresses in materials developed over long periods of time cause the majority of the failures attributed to random failure.

A white paper by Jeff Smith, former Technical Editor for Uptime Magazine, titled "Predicting Failures by Wirelessly Monitoring Fatigue" that summarizes some of the benefits of wirelessly monitoring strain and metal fatigue on mining haul trucks is available for download.
